We are in the May 23 issue of Woman’s World magazine!

015

I usually walk every morning for 45 minutes around our neighborhood. On May 17  I briskly walked to the Von’s supermarket to purchase a copy of Woman’s World magazine. I was informed by the staff of the  magazine that my story was featured in the May 23 issues and it would hit the news stand that day. As I was walking I was was trying to recall the questions the reporter, Kathy Fitzpatrick asked me this past February. We chatted about many events of my past.

I arrived at 6:30 and went to the magazine stand, but the magazine issue was for May 16. I asked the grocery checker if they had received the May 23 issue and she said the magazine gal had not yet arrived. I explained that I had been  interviewed by Woman’s World magazine, and they had published my story in the May 23 issue. She then asked me what did they write about. I then explained my story of being a parent to my granddaughters while our daughter deployed to Afghanistan. She looked at me and then said “I never thought about how  single military parents would do with their children when deployed. “ Wow, that’s something to think about.”

I think most people aren’t aware of what military single parents have to go through.

I then walked  back home. I waited until later that evening to walk back to the market.  After Alan an I  ate dinner, we then walked to the market.

As soon as we arrived at the store we booth went to the the magazine rack display near the check out stand. We each picked up our own magazine. I flipped through the pages so quickly until I found our article, and on page 23  Homefront Heros section ,the title of the story-  A Grandma’s call to duty.  The picture of Alan and I with an additional picture of Ivie, Erin and Bailey. I read through  the article in the store, hoping the story would stay true to our experiences. The article touched on all the things I shared with the reporter. I was so pleased with our story. The reporter expressed how we felt during that time of deployment, along with our goal of staying positive.

It’s strange reading about  your past experiences. It’s all most as is if it’s not really you, but it did happen to us.

I hope our story will bring awareness to all those families supporting their military loved one during deployment.

THANK YOU WOMANS WORLD of publishing our story!

Star and Stripes newspaper article has arrived!

Teri Weaver the reporter for Stars and Stripes newspaper took the time to  interview our entire family. She asked us many questions about our experiences with deployment and I think her article really educates the reader. One of my friends called and said this article was so interesting.

The article was published on Nov. 27 in Stars and Stripes online newspaper.  Stars and Stripes has given me permission to share this article with you. I hope you enjoy reading- “Grandparents play vital role for many families during wartime deployments”.

This is such an honor for our family and all those “deployed grandparents”, raising their grandchildren while their loved one is serving  our Country.

I think our government and military are starting to become aware, how grandparents are playing a very important role for the family during deployment.

Those grandparents may not know that they are keeping their  family grounded during deployment.  I surely didn’t when my daughter was deployed. I just wanted my granddaughters and my daughter to have  a positive experience with deployment.

Thank you National Guard Foundations magazine for the wonderful article.

This national magazine is distributed to 400,000 National Guard soldiers.

I was interviewed by Rachel Gladstone the Staff writer for the magazine last summer. Rachel took the time not only ask me questions about my experiences with deployment, she interviewed my entire family on how deployment effected them.  When she asked me questions about  my experience it took me back in time of my daughter’s deployment.  I got to tell you I had tears in my eyes.  This surprised me . I thought I was over being emotional, it’s been almost two and half years ago now. I think when deployment is over, you think it’s over. But what I learned about deployment you never really forget the feelings and emotions  you had during that time. For me, that’s OK. I survived a challenging yet rewarding time in my life.

I am so happy that the media and the military are starting to recognize the families that support our military.

So here is to all of you out there supporting your military loved one and family.

I hope you enjoy the article.
